Advanced visual artists (including ceramics, painting, drawing, environmental arts, and mixed media) of all backgrounds who have reached a level of maturity in their work and have strong records of artistic achievement or the promise of this achievement, are encouraged to apply for residency. The Serenbe Institute does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, religion, national origin, age, gender or sexual orientation. One Resident Artist per calendar quarter is accepted for a residency. Although the primary emphasis is on visual artists, periodically residencies are also offered to writers and composers.
The Serenbe Institute Studio (approximately 1,000 sq. feet) is available as a work space for artists in residence. It is well-suited for painting, drawing, and sculpture. Often the Resident Artist will be able to use a Serenbe resident’s facility i.e.; a potter’s studio, digital photo studio, etc.
SERENBE INSTITUTE PROVIDES housing, studio, and at least one hosted community meal per week. A general stipend of $350 per week will be provided by The Serenbe Institute.
ARTIST IS RESPONSIBLE FOR non-refundable application fee of $25 payable to The Serenbe Institute; food, travel and materials. Transportation is needed as residents are expected to shop and cook for themselves.
PROGRAMMATIC EXPECTATIONS & OPPORTUNITIES: The primary purposes of the residency are 1) for Resident Artists to spend uninterrupted time creating work in the Serenbe community, and 2) encouraging and fostering an appreciation for the creative process within community. Each Resident Artist is asked to spend time during his/her stay participating in educational outreach opportunities, which may include slide lectures, workshops, open studio, video interviews, and other activities in the Serenbe community. A gallery exhibition at StudioSwan (www.studioswan.com ) may be offered to the Resident Artist after the residency period. The Serenbe Institute offers former Resident Artists additional opportunities for a return residency and special long-term residency programs.
